My name is Rhona and I have taught pupils with complex learning needs for nearly 13 years. Music has always been a passion of mine, but despite having some formal training, being able to play several instruments and leading a choir, I have always found traditional music approaches don’t really work with children with complex needs.
When Caroline McCluskey visited my school when I worked with pupils with visual, hearing and other sensory impairments I discovered the Orff approach to teaching music and it opened up my world.
As the Orff approach focusses on music, movement and language together, this opens up all sorts of possibilities!
There is no longer a focus on attainment, because there is actually no right or wrong, just an inclusive approach, where everyone can create, everyone achieves. Since becoming involved with the Orff- Schulwerk approach I have been on several amazing courses which are such fun, energise me (it takes a lot to get me up on a Saturday morning!) and hopefully make me a better teacher! I have also met several very lovely people from all over the world and it is great to be part of the Orff movement!
